Dear Mr & Mrs Munroe

My deepest sympathies during this most difficult of times.

My name is Alexander Dubois, Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. Fairfax. I have personally requested that this letter be conveyed to you by the representatives from Starfleet Command, who, I have every faith, will be supporting you through processing the devastating news of your son’s passing.

Starfleet is not a military organisation as a matter of course. Though we uphold many of the finest traditions of uniformed service as a beacon of example to others who share humanity’s desire for peace and exploration. Your son was a true beholder of those core ideals and one of the very finest examples of a Starfleet officer.

I have therefore taken it upon myself to write to you today and revive another ancient tradition of the service. I hope that hearing testimony of your son’s character and achievements will bring you some comfort through the unimaginable torment you and your family now have to endure.

While I did not have the pleasure of knowing your son more personally, I have made extensive efforts to learn about him from those who knew him best, his direct colleagues, friends, and his long-term partner, Ensign Eweld Taro. I am deeply saddened, having learned so much about your son in recent days, that I have lost such an incredibly well-respected, ambitious, and affectionate member of this crew. It pains me that I should not get the chance to know him better.

Your son served with the utmost dedication and humility. Speaking with his head of Department, Lieutenant Commander Sovek, who describes him as being “Meticulous about detail and showed an impressive aptitude for lateral thinking and objective analysis.” Trust me when I say that for a Vulcan, Commander Sovek’s comments are highly commendatory.

Personally, his friends and his partner describe him as an incredibly selfless individual who would go out of his way to make time for others and always sought to be present to provide guidance and support wherever possible, sometimes at personal sacrifice. He was always manning the helm of the social calendar, organising events and including others without fear or favour.

While there is nothing I can say that could ever hope to take away your pain, just know that as your son’s captain, I take his passing as a profoundly personal loss. Every member of my crew has a voice, and I consider every officer on board the Fairfax to be a part of an extended family, journeying together to seek out new life and new civilisations and to boldly go where no one has gone before. Your son was no small part in achieving that vision, the very mandate on which Starfleet and the United Federation of Planets were founded. His absence will be felt with great significance.

I would finally like to extend an open invitation to make contact with me directly, should you feel it appropriate to do so and for whatever reason that you feel I can be of any assistance. I am, and will always be at your service.
