Breanna raises her arm in a stretch as she looks up at her ceiling. She’s in the midst of writing a report for the Bajoran Ministry of Health and Starfleet Medical, detailing the progress she is making with one of the families she was assigned to. She sighed, then saved her report and wheeled toward the window in her office in the central offices of the Bajoran Ministry of Health. She reflected on the journey that had led her here, to being stationed on a Bajoran colony, working with families that were recovering slowly from the Dominion war. It had been nearly 30 years since the Dominion had wiped out the Bajoran colony (one of the events that precipitated the Dominion War) and families were still recovering. Though all that was left was the memorials and statutes dedicated to those who had been killed, the emotional wounds were very much still a problem.

It was rare for a Starfleet officer to be a social worker, and rarer still for that officer to be physically disabled. But Breanna had made it work, though not without effort. She was a congenital triple amputee, missing both her legs and an arm since birth. She had repeatedly declined prosthetics, opting instead to use a wheelchair – modeled after an old 21st century chair, equipped with the latest 25th century technology that enables her to live as independent as possible. Her quarters had holo-emitters for her holographic aides that helped her with caretaking needs. Overall, she lived as independently as possible.

As she worked, she received a message from Command, indicating a possible transfer. Breanna sighed, then opened the message. As she read, she her brow furrowed. These were transfer orders, signed and dated, that ordered her to report to Starbase 86 and her new post – the USS Melbourne. Confused, she messaged her superior officer about it to receive confirmation. Within minutes, she gets a message back.
“Order confirmed. Prepare for transition. USS Platte departs in 3 days.”
Breanna curses, then sighs. She didn’t want to leave her post, leave the families she had grown to love. But such was the nature of Starfleet. She wondered was was next for her, especially onboard a starship.

A few days later, she was onboard the USS Platte, her bags packed in the hold, warping away from the Gamma Quadrant, through the wormhole, then on to Starbase 86.

Starbase 86, 0930 Zulu (22:30 local time) 

Commander Pearse was going through the finalized roster for the umpteenth time, fretting over the names of personnel that were slowly gathering at Starbase 86. Captain Oteng wanted the finalized roster in a few hours, and Siobhan wanted it to be perfect. She noticed a name under the staff officers – Lt. Breanna Sprenger – and tapped it. Her dossier came up, and Siobhan arched an eyebrow. A senior officer that was disabled. She was intrigued and read Lt. Sprenger’s service record. She was a solid officer, and knew that she would be a fine addition to the Melbourne. Tapping her combadge, she contacts Fabien about this new officer and her needs. She wanted Lt. Sprenger to feel comfortable onboard.

After meeting with Captain Oteng, she began to make preparations to greet Lt. Sprenger and allow her to feel at home.

Starbase 86, 28 hours later

Breanna wheels through Starbase, heading towards the area where her new ship was docked. People moved out of her way, some staring at her as she passed by. She was used to the staring, but it was still slightly uncomfortable for her. Nonetheless, she didn’t show that it bothered her. She checked in, then headed to her quarters; excited for what the future would bring.

    An interesting choice of character and the kind of person you very rarely come across in any form of fiction. I will be interested to see how they deal with the new situation and the crew of the Melbourne.
