P5 – Investigating a Derelict

Derelict Freighter - Bridge

A mobile analysis lab stood stationary aboard the derelict freighter, illuminated by flickering emergency lights and the soft glow of portable data terminals. The room was cramped, with samples and tools scattered across a rugged workbench, creating an atmosphere of urgent, yet necessary research.

Carefully, T’Zel collected and prepared samples from the freighter’s hull for in-depth analysis. This would provide more details about what had happened to the ship. While they had validated information that the freighter had been attacked by a Klingon vessel, there were still gaps in their understanding of certain aspects. The tampering of cargo had been ongoing for some time, so this single incident, however severe, was just one of many.

Tapping the console in the mobile analysis lab, she ran a series of diagnostic tests on the residue. T’Zel took a deep breath as the results slowly appeared. The data confirmed that the residue’s composition was consistent with Klingon disruptor technology.

“The data matches known Klingon disruptor compounds. We should see a distinct signature within moments,” T’Zel said, her focus locked on her console.

Nearby, Jhaerys simultaneously began compiling sensor data from the freighter. He narrowed his eyes, tapping the side of his console, and noted the unusual energy patterns echoing through most of the logs. They needed more data, but there was too much ambiguity to rely solely on Jhaerys’ gut feeling. “I’m already picking up faint energy echoes that fluctuate intermittently. They could indicate a low-grade cloaking device at work,” he remarked.

The analysis lab remained the focal point for both officers as they dedicated themselves to their work. Though they were alone, their focus was unwavering. The ambient light was dim, and the hum of their equipment underscored the tension building between them as they worked on their primary tasks. Data streams and holographic readouts flickered across screens, casting shifting patterns on the walls.

“My analysis shows a 97% match with known Klingon disruptor compounds,” T’Zel said, relieved that her earlier scans had been accurate. She glanced at Jhaerys.

Cross-referencing the sensor data, Jhaerys shrugged. “At the same time, the sensor echoes suggest the presence of a cloaking device operating at a low grade. I propose we adjust our data filters to focus on known cloak frequencies.”

Nodding firmly, T’Zel replied, “While that may be an improvisational method, it could speed things up. However, a systematic approach will provide more reliable data. We can’t risk misinterpretation.” She looked at the young ensign, impressed by his creative, out-of-the-box thinking.

“I understand your caution,” Jhaerys said, raising a hand as if an idea had just occurred to him. “But sometimes flexibility reveals nuances that strict protocols miss. Perhaps we can combine our methods, start with a baseline scan, then adjust dynamically?” He was now spitting out ideas that could work in their favor.

For a moment, T’Zel considered the proposal, then nodded slowly. “That’s a reasonable compromise. Let’s initiate a full baseline scan and then apply targeted filters based on any deviations,” she expanded on the ensign’s idea.

The lab’s atmosphere grew more focused as the two officers compiled their findings. The data on the screen now displayed detailed graphs and residue analyses, with a palpable sense of urgency in the subdued lighting. The two officers continued their work, both examining the newly uncovered data.

Tapping her lip as she studied the data, T’Zel thought aloud. “Our current data is compelling yet incomplete. We need additional samples to be definitive, but any further probing could draw unwanted attention.”

“We’re at a crossroads,” Jhaerys said, looking at the senior officer questioningly. “Do we collect more data, risking detection, or consolidate our findings and proceed with caution?”

T’Zel tapped the air as if using a console. “I suggest we secure our current evidence, document every detail, and plan for a discreet follow-up investigation.”

Jhaerys hummed in thought as he saw a notification on his console. “Agreed. We’ll compile our results and adjust our analysis methods for the next phase. Our differing approaches may cause friction, but our shared goal remains: to uncover the truth without alerting our adversaries.”

She lowered her hand and looked at the ensign with a satisfied smile, the most one could expect from a Vulcan. “Understood. Let’s finalize our report and relay it back to Ukiah Command.”

Two differing approaches to gathering the information and analysing it, both with the same goal in mind. An interesting approach, but it makes sense to look at things from different angles. These two officers are working well together and understand how each other thinks. A nice little piece.
