Part of USS Cupertino: Change It Up

Unexpected

Bridge, USS Cupertino

“Captain on the bridge.”, quirked a petite-looking trill in teal uniform as Saffiya Nassar left the turbolift and for the first time set foot on what was going to be her new home. She had reached the rank of Captain only a few weeks prior, and since the USS Saint Raphael already was in capable and experienced hands, she had received transfer orders to the USS Cupertino, a California-class vessel. Which was a step down from the Olympic-class Saffiya had served as First Officer on, but would be an excellent learning environment for a new captain such as herself.  The bridge didn’t deviate from what she had expected and come to know from similar vessels, though it was a lot more empty than she had anticipated. Besides the female trill, only two other officers manned the heart of the Cupertino, and while all of them were giving Saffiya their full attention until she gave an at-ease nod, neither of them appeared to be her first officer – or any other senior staff for that matter. “I was expecting to meet Lieutenant Trova.”, she remarked to no one in particular. Thankfully, the trill seemed eager to chat. “She went to see Captain Jurev off.”Saffiya sighed. Captain Jurev had retired due to personal reasons, and from what she had gathered, he was tightly knit with his crew. She could understand Trova going to see him off, but she didn’t exactly like it. “When is she due to return?”, she asked, to which the trill shrugged. Wonderful. Saffiya had expected a lot, but not this. She would have loved to ask what the hell people thought was the right way to act towards their new CO, but if not even her First Officer had the decency to greet her, she couldn’t exactly blame the Ensign for lacking decorum. And she had no interest in losing face within mere minutes of her first command. “I will be in my ready room.”, she said instead, and headed into the corresponding direction. She would have familiarise herself with the vessel and its crew, and then hope that things would normalise themselves.
