Starbase Bravo: Collaborative Writing Roulette

May 29, 2025

It’s a new day aboard Starbase Bravo, with a brand-new mission that offers novel ways to collaborate!  Starbase Bravo operates as a sandbox where every member of Bravo Fleet is welcome to write collaboratively. Our members write slice-of-life stories about junior officers working their duty shifts, making lifelong friendships, and gradually proving themselves up the ranks.  While the Academy and Intelligence departments lay out the overarching mission, our members are empowered to drive the story forward.

Open today is the new mission, Look Upwards, telling the tales of what happened next after Starbase Bravo survived a surprise attack in Nightfall, and the Vaadwaur Supremacy invasion was repelled from the Alpha and Beta Quadrants.

With Starbase Bravo’s repairs nearing completion, the crew has returned their attention to coordinating logistics for the sector.  Operational objectives include:

  • Routing cargo supplies, trade, and humanitarian aid to the Federation worlds in greatest need
  • Starship towing, repair and resupply for the Starfleet and Federation vessels that were damaged or stranded in the sector
  • Transitioning the most critically injured patients from Starbase Bravo to Starfleet Medical’s long-term care facility on Mellstoxx III
  • Utilising intelligence and security to ensure cargo reaches its intended destination without being waylaid by opportunistic criminals

As important as it is to repair what the Vaadwaur have damaged, it’s the duty of every Starfleet officer to look to the future.  Shaken by what Vaadwaur almost took from the Federation can serve as a reminder to focus on building something new, something stronger.

Collaborative Writing Roulette

The watchwords aboard Starbase Bravo have always been: collaborative writing.  That’s because our storytelling is member-led.  The underlying themes of the new mission are forming new friendships, building new working networks, and starting new projects.  To further these themes, the Academy staff is offering Collaborative Writing Roulette as an opt-in game mechanic to all Starbase Bravo members for the duration of this new mission.

Here’s how it works: Any Starbase Bravo member who volunteers for Collaborative Writing Roulette will be assigned a writing partner and a one-sentence writing prompt every week.  Each participating member will then be responsible for DMing their writing partner on Discord and starting a BFMS Story to write together for Starbase Bravo.  You can choose to accept the writing prompt, or change it, or write about something else entirely.  These prompts are offered without attachment.

There’s no expectation for writing pairs to publish their stories within one week.  Although participating members will be assigned a totally different writing partner each week, you can publish your Story anytime during the duration of the Look Upwards mission.  Please let the Academy staff know if you’d like to opt-out before the end of the mission.

We intend to suggest pairings of members who have never collaborated aboard SBB before, but this will depend on who volunteers.  There may end up being trios too.  Certainly, we can promise the pairings will be random and unexpected.  We hope members will write with someone new and explore an ongoing subplot through the rest of this mission and into the next.

Sign-up here for Collaborative Writing Roulette!

And if you don’t have a character aboard Starbase Bravo, it’s never too late.  You can still apply to Starbase Bravo right now!  What’re you waiting for?

Remember that progression through positions and ranks aboard Starbase Bravo is based on your collaborative writing activity.  If you’ve been a member of Starbase Bravo for a while, take a moment to refresh yourself on advancement through Starbase Bravo.  You might be overdue for a promotion and not even know it.

If you have questions about any of this, feel free to DM Brendan or drop a note in the #academy-help channel on Discord.

Your Starbase Bravo adventure awaits!
