Paint Me a Picture #2

Description

No tricks to get yall in here this time. This is the next in the series of short form descriptive writing challenges.

This competition will be the opposite of the generic more PMAP 1.

Paint the reader a picture ofnone of your characters quarters/berthing. What does their room look like, what kind of furniture do they have, what momentos and keep sakes are laying around? Is it messy or clean. Whats the layout, is the bedroom to the left or the right?

But again, you only have 150 words to do it.

 

Criteria

  • Solo entries only. Maybe be a segment of a post published during the comp
  • Must be 150 words or less
  • Must describe a characters quarters or berthing.
  • Submit directly to the entry on the competition submission box

K’vathra’s quarters were small, especially for one who had once carried the name of a royal House. To the right, a narrow bunk bore a blanket folded with surgical precision, topped with furs from beasts she had slain herself. Opposite, a desk lay buried beneath data slates; crew rosters, equipment manifests, tactical schematics, and a half-finished battle formation. A tik’leth hung above, its durasteel edge catching the red emergency light. A fragment of hull plating from her first posting was mounted above the small viewport, jagged scars marking trials endured. A single chair stood beneath the desk, its leather worn from long nights of planning. On the tabletop rested only a comb and a small vial of burned incense, the scent mingling with the tang of metal and ozone. When the T’Ong shifted under warp, the quarters rattled, echoing with the memory of battles survived.

As the doors part and you walk into the room, the first thing you notice is a single bunk lying against the starboard wall. It's perfectly made, the blanket folded with the precision of someone fresh out of the Academy. Above it is a faded phone of a blue world, home, it glows softly under the light from a nearby reading lamp. A desk dominates the centre of the room, its surface neat but alive with purpose. A PADD is active next to a half-drunk mug of something long cold. A model Starship, half-built, is at the desk's centre. In a corner, a plant struggles with the artificial lighting and recycled air but remains defiant. Nothing in this room is accidental; even the quietness seems to have been artificially placed here. The embodiment of a lifetime of service in Starfleet.
