Summary

After serving ninety days at the Jaros II penal colony (and being demoted) for assaulting a superior officer, Raygi had difficulty finding an assignment that would take him. He applied to the USS Aquarius as a last resort; had he not gotten this assignment, Raygi had planned to leave Starfleet and returning to Bajor for civilian service. He was accepted as Assistant Chief of Operations with the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade.

Appearance

Raygi has been described as “built like a shuttle craft.” He is of slightly above average height (approximately 5 feet 10), and is 260 pounds of solid muscle. Raygi’s shoulders and chest are very broad, and his arms almost bulge out of his sleeves. Raygi wears his dark blonde hair in a short and conservative style. And of course he also wears the traditional Bajoran earring, a symbol of faith in The Prophets

Personality

A product of the Bajor Children’s Welfare System, Raygi Benyan learned very early in life to cherish the personal relationships he was able to develop; since he went from foster home to foster home, he craved the sense of belonging that only a real family could provide. Raygi has a very outgoing personality, and he tries to stay well informed on a variety of topics so that conversation will flow easily. But don’t let his outgoing nature fool you…Raygi is fiercely loyal to his Starfleet family, and he has lashed out in anger when that loyalty was questioned.

History

Raygi was born in June of 2370 in Hedrikspool province on Bajor. As a child, he was repeatedly told by his foster families that his parents were killed before Raygi’s first birthday. Because there was no social welfare infrastructure in place any longer, Raygi stayed with distant relatives until the Bajoran Provisional Government was established; he was then declared a ward of the state and went from foster home to foster home until he aged out of the system in 2387.

Raygi was a difficult child to deal with, getting into physical fights with classmates almost daily. He earned a reputation in school as someone who was intelligent, but also took no crap from anybody. He had very few friends…and those that he did have kept him at arm’s length because they didn’t want to set off Raygi’s volatile temper.

After leaving school, Raygi decided to try and turn his life around and become a productive member of society. And the best means of doing that, he was told, was to join Statfleet. After taking the entrance exams twice, Raygi was admitted to the Academy in 2388 to study Operations. Although he received high marks in his technical subjects, Raygi struggled with a lot of the social sciences and procedural classes. And of course, there were the fights. Raygi earned a reputation as a brawler, which made him famous among his fellow Cadets and a nuisance among the Faculty. Raygi graduated in the middle of his class in 2392 and was assigned as an Ensign in Ops to the USS Olympus, a Galaxy class vessel.

On the Olympus, Raygi quickly established himself as a competent and efficient Ops officer. It was his off duty conduct that held him back…numerous confrontations and physical altercations that led to him being unceremoniously transferred to Starbase 216 after less than a year. Raygi stayed aboard the Starbase for two years, trying to keep his temper under control and largely failing. Finally, after three years as an Ensign, Raygi was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade in 2395 and transferred back to the Olympus. That vessel was under the command of a young and idealistic new Captain who apparently believed in redemption and second chances. Raygi was named Chief of Operations of that vessel; that position earned him a promotion to Lieutenant in 2399. He served on the Olympus until he was court-martialed in for striking a superior officer. Raygi served a three month sentence in the penal colony on Jaros II; following his release, he had difficulty finding an assignment that would take him. He applied to the USS Aquarius as a last resort, and was accepted as Chief of Operations.
