Summary

Yaltar is a young male Cardassian Starfleet Officer. He is one of very few Cardassian Officers in Starfleet. His own species consider him a traitor for joining the Federation and he has been ostracised from his own people and family. Yaltar grew up in a typical Cardassian home where he learned the art of having a photo memory and was given a Cardassian education during his younger years.

When Yaltar was 8 years old, while onboard a Cardassian freighter that was attacked, he remained the only surviving person aboard the ship by hiding in a cargo supply box when the ship was boarded and the people aboard massacred. Yaltar was rescued by a Federation Starship and after several failed attempts at trying to return him to his own people, was adopted by one of the officers aboard the ship.

History

When Yaltar was 8 years old, while onboard a Cardassian freighter that was attacked, he remained the only surviving person aboard the ship by hiding in a cargo supply box when the ship was boarded and the people aboard massacred. 

A Federation Starship found the ship, and while performing an intelligence-gathering mission, located the young boy.  Though frightened at first, Yaltar quickly warmed to the crew as they showed him kindness.  Yaltar began to open up to the crew, sharing knowledge of Cardassia and their way of life while also learning about Earth and the Federation.  After several failed attempts to return Yaltar to his people, he was adopted by Lieutenant Charles Owenby, the ship’s operation officer.

Yaltar grew very close to Charles Owenby, coming to consider him his father after several months under his care.  Lieutenant Charles Owenby sponsored Yaltar after Yaltar showed a desire to join Starfleet.  After a rigorous application and interview process, Yaltar was finally accepted into Starfleet.

Yaltar excelled in Starfleet, his skills and experiences aboard a Federation Starship helping him tremendously.  Also, his photographic memory allowed him to excel in many of his classes.  Yaltar decided to seek a career as an operations officer, following in his father’s footsteps.  His studies of the holosuites, life support systems, and Starfleet computer systems were very successful.

Yaltar would go one to become a very successful Operations Officer aboard the USS Dignity.  Even though Yaltar faced discrimination more frequently then he would like to admit, with some of his fellow officers not trusting him, he rose the ranks as he proved his worth as a valuable member of the crew.

Yaltar has recently been approved to transfer to the Guardian Station as Chief Operation Officer with the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
