Summary

A born scientist, Lt. Rahman’s work on wormholes, black holes, and harnessing gravitational forces for strategic purposes earned her top marks from the Vulcan Science Academy. After starting her doctorate in astronomy and finishing a fellowship studying the wormhole at Deep Space Nine, she requested a transfer to the USS Melbourne to continue her research while fulfilling her deep-space requirements of her PhD program.

History

Lt. Ruth Rahman, born on a small town in Illinois (located within the former territory of the United States), had always looked up at the stars with curiosity and wonder. Born into a medical family, Ruth wanted to follow a different path than the rest of her family. At 18, she was offered admission into Starfleet Academy and was assigned at the Bajor campus.

While at the academy, Ruth took a strong interest in astronomy and made that her focus while at the Academy. After she commissioned into Starfleet as an Ensign, she applied for an exchange position at the Vulcan Science Academy that would allow her to work on a Master’s of Science in Astronomy. After taking the grueling entrance and qualification exams and a lengthy interview by a panel of three faculty members, she demonstrated that she had the aptitude to have a spot at the Science Academy. After two years of detailed research of black holes, gravitational waves, and wormholes, she earned her MS in Astronomy; her dissertation on the power of gravity as applied to the universe.

Once graduated, Ruth immediately applied to Starfleet Academy’s doctoral program, choosing astronomy as the main field. She was accepted and once again returned to Starfleet Academy as an officer-student.

After a year at Starfleet Academy’s main campus in San Francisco, Ruth received orders to head back to Bajor, as to enable her study of the stable wormhole to the Gamma Quadrant. Returning to her alma mater, Ruth threw herself onto her research and her studies, developing new avenues for the harnessing of the special gravimetric waves that sustained and stabilized the Gamma Quadrant Wormhole.

While on Bajor, Ruth met Lt. Commander Milena “Elena” Sabiha Taimona, (half-Bajoran/half-Human); a JAG officer assigned to the Federation Embassy at Bajor.  The two met at an event sponsored by the Federation Embassy, celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the ending of the Dominion War. The two hit it off, and after a year of courting, were married in an official ceremony presided by Captain Anton Semenov. After a brief honeymoon to Earth, the couple moved back to Bajor and continued their careers, albeit together.

In 2402, Ruth was recommended for assignment aboard the USS Melbourne by her supervising professor after being informed that her program required a deep space assignment aboard a starship. She and her wife received orders to transfer together to the Melbourne, although in different departments. While Ruth was assigned as a senior researcher to the Astronomy/Astrophysics department, her wife would work as a JAG Senior Staff Officer under the Chief of Operations.
