Appearance

Ensign Kian Harol is a short and slightly-built Trill, standing about 5’6” at most. Fair skin is marked by delicate almond-hued spots that trail from his temples and follow the line of his body. Blue-green eyes once held a curious spark. They were curious, patient and observant. Ever since the Vaadwaur attack on the USS Brawley, his gaze has turned hollow. Their color is still vivid, but what rests behind them is vacant.

His dirty blonde hair has grown just slightly longer than regulation. It’s the result of forgetfulness more than rebellion. He doesn’t fuss with it anymore. A scruffy beard normally covers his jawline. The smile that used to flicker when teasing friends or fixing a stubborn diagnostic has vanished. It hasn’t returned since Ensign Rho’s death. Now his expression rests in a quiet, drawn stillness. He seems haunted and aged beyond his 25 years. There’s no joy in his features anymore. The muscles that once knew how to laugh seem to have forgotten.

Kian’s uniform hangs more loosely on his frame now. His appetite has dulled in the haze of guilt and grief. Facial features are becoming gaunt with the weight of passing time. His cheekbones are more pronounced. He doesn’t seem to notice. If he does, he doesn’t care.

There’s pain in his voice, even when speaking softly. He’s grown more silent because each conversation takes massive effort. The Ensign avoids eye contact more than he used to. He flinches at loud noises and startles more easily now.

There’s still a quiet endurance in how he moves. He shows up for duty and works diligently. He completes the repairs. Anybody looking closely would see the cracks under his surface. His fingers tremble when he’s alone. The subtle way his eyes linger show he sees life as a constant memorial.

He’s somebody who has stepped too close to grief and hasn’t found his way back.

Personality

Soft-spoken and steady, Ensign Harol carries himself with the unassuming air of someone who’d rather get the work done than be noticed for it. Before the attack on the USS Brawley, he was known for his reliability and methodical focus. He often took the late shifts and tedious jobs that nobody else wanted.

Since the day the Vaadwaur tore the hull open and took his closest friend, Kian has changed.

The easy rhythm of his duties is now strained by guilt that won’t release its grip. He hasn’t laughed since. Sleeping seems impossible. Every task he takes on becomes a distraction from the silence that follows him like a shadow. He rarely talks about the explosion, and hasn’t told anyone that he asked Ensign Rho to take his place before it happened.

Kian is haunted by the randomness of survival. He can still see her grinning as she took over for him. That moment replays when he closes his eyes.

Even in the weight of loss, Kian focuses on his work. The Brawley’s constant maintenance tasks have become a refuge. Each repair he completes is for her. He’s trying to fix something no plasma weld can reach.

There’s still kindness within him. There’s a carefulness in the way he watches over others. He’s quieter and more measured now. He holds onto his grief like a fragile box. He tries to keep it out of sight, but it always lingers.

People see him and think he’s just a soft-spoken tech with a knack for keeping calm. They don’t know he’s still carrying her voice. He hopes one day the silence will lift and he can return to who he was.

History

Kian Harol was born on Tril in 2377. He spent most of his life on Tellar Prime due to his father’s assignment with the Federation trade commission. Raised there in the industrial highlands near Yeltur City, Kian grew up in a tightly-knit community of Starfleet families, Tellarite locals, and off-world technicians. His active childhood was split between school, athletics, and helping his mother with environmental systems repair projects.

Kian gravitated early toward engineering and technical problem-solving with an enthusiastic energy. He developed a reputation for being methodical about his work. The student was especially interested in hull integrity systems and adaptive shielding. His academic record was solid but not exceptional. His practical skills and levelheaded nature earned him a placement at Starfleet Academy.

There he excelled in hands-on coursework focusing on structural systems and emergency response operations. The damage control field seemed to call him. It was an intersection of engineering and crisis management. During his second year, Kian’s mother passed away unexpectedly from complications related to a long-managed heart condition. The loss affected him deeply. Though he took time to recover, Kian returned to his studies with quiet resolve.

Kian was assigned to the USS Brawley as part of its Operations Division after graduation. He was immediately assigned as a Damage Control Officer. His job was to oversee critical system maintenance and structural repairs during routine and emergency situations. His record shows solid performance, reliability under pressure, and strong teamwork.

Ensign Harol was changed after the Brawley suffered a surprise attack by Vaadwaur forces near Vaabanth IV. The assault caused heavy damage to the ship’s saucer section, including a rupture in Cargo Bay 3 that resulted in multiple losses and injuries. Kian had been in the bay right before the incident. He’d swapped shifts with a friend from the Academy minutes before the breach occurred. He played a key role in immediate repair efforts following the attack despite his shocked state. He now suffers long-term effects of extreme survivor’s guilt.

Though still recovering emotionally from the loss, Ensign Harol tries to be steady and capable. He remains deeply committed to his work. His technical skill and quiet focus continue to be an asset to the crew.
