Summary

Ensign Elyas Sark is a medical student studying at the Starfleet Medical Academy teaching hospital on Caelum Station. His ambition is to become an internist.

Personality

/ Sark’s gut instinct leans towards pessimism. It may not always be the face he shows to the universe, but it’s almost always his first thought.  He expects the laws of physics to never rule in his favour; every situation can always go from bad to worse.  His pessimism hasn’t lulled him into forfeit or inaction; rather, it has tempered him into a compassionate and hard worker as a medical student.  Passing the academy entrance exams proved nearly impossible to him, failing more than five times.  Failure only motivated Sark to try harder, ignoring any limits of his body and intellect.

/ Subconsciously, Sark is prone to a fearful avoidant attachment style.  He wishes to be seen as independent.  Through the academy, he avoided many close relationships for fear of any appearance that he wasn’t solely capable of graduating the academy on his own.  At heart, he craves building close trust with friends and lovers, but he deeply fears the vulnerability of surrendering to that trust.

/ While Sark had to learn perseverance in his studies to make his way into Starfleet Academy, he believes in the pleasure principles in friendships and loves.  He was raised with the fairytale that relationships are easy.  While he doesn’t lack tact entirely, he tends to believe that compromise in love is actually settling, and so he’s prone to be stuck in his ways without much flexibility.

History

/ For an Argelian of humanoid body-plan on a world width Earth-similar lengths of years, Sark was a relative latecomer to Starfleet Academy.  Even those students who weren’t top of their respective classes were accepted into the academy before Sark.

/ Unlike most of his peers or Argelius II, he only accumulated the prequisites for the Starfleet Academy Preparatory Program because his mother had enrolled him in the Federation boarding school system, rather than a traditional Argelian education.  His mother’s own callings required all of her attentions and the Federation school could fill in the gaps where she might have fallen short.  Academics were not his priority until after adolescence.  Growing up on a pleasure planet, the mysteries of interpersonal interaction and the simplicity of an exquisite meal held more allure for Sark than books or arithmetic.
